Presby LASIK (Multifocal LASIK, Bifocal LASIK, or LASIK for Presbyopia)

Presby LASIK, also known as multifocal LASIK, is an experimental type of laser vision correction surgery that changes the way clear surface of the eye (cornea) to set different areas to see near far distances.

This surgery corrects presbyopia, causing near vision as to conceal the eye’s natural lens begins to strengthen, usually around age 40. If you are nearsighted and have presbyopia, you may be able to watch closely without their usual glasses or contact lenses, but not when you’re using.

If you live in the United States, at this time presby LASIK is available only if you are enrolled in a formal investigation of safety and efficacy of the procedure. The results of these types of studies are used to determine whether the procedure should receive U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval, at which time presby LASIK could become widely available.

On November 2006 the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), held in Las Vegas, several eye surgeons presented the initial results of small studies indicate that the results were positive for the procedure, particularly for people who are Farsighter and who have developed presbyopia because they are older.

How Presby the LASIK procedure is done

LASIK Presby also called multifocal LASIK because it works on the principles virtually identical to those used for artificial multifocal lenses provide correction for vision presbyopes. Presby With LASIK, energy laser eye reshaped its clear surface in different areas, so that light is bent or refracted differently in each area. Thus, both near and distance vision can be achieved simultaneously.

Because presby LASIK is still in research phases, different approaches are being studied to determine how the eye should be on how to achieve the best possible vision correction for presbyopes.

Bruce Jackson, MD, said that the center of the cornea is altered to improve near vision, while the outer periphery has areas of vision at a distance. For people who are nearsighted and presbyopic, different forms of eye configurations are being studied. In some cases, near vision correction is presented in the central area of the cornea, and in others near vision correction set out in the peripheral area.

Another method presby LASIK adds what is known as aspheric corrections to the surface of the eye. Aspheric forms are not perfectly round and cree that help reduce distortions of vision or aberrations that, in general, may be associated with vision correction.

However, other presby LASIK research methods are intended to provide personalized procedures uniquely tailored to the individual’s needs and lifestyle. If a person makes a significant near a job, for example, presby LASIK vision correction procedure could be adapted to improve near vision instead of better distance vision.

Does the Presby LASIK procedure work?

A 2006 conference AAO report submitted by Jorge L. Alió, MD, PhD, noted that the LASIK procedure presby seems more effective in Farsighter people and has demonstrated ability to restore even moderate amounts of near vision.

Alio said presby LASIK works best when patients are very carefully selected to ensure that the procedure is right for them. You could be eliminated as a candidate, for example, if they have been subjected to previous eye surgery or if you have an illness that affects their ability to cure, such as diabetes.

In a Canadian study reported in 2006 AAO conference in Jackson, 49 Farsighter and presbyopic patients were involved, and 82 eyes were treated. In all cases after one year, patients were able to see 20/25 or better and J3 (ability to read press) near vision or better.

Due to various modifications are continually testing under this experimental procedure, it is difficult to interpret the results uniformly because they can vary depending on the type of method used to presby LASIK.

What could go wrong after a Presby LASIK procedure ?

Some researchers report that some presbyopic individuals are able to read without glasses or contact lenses within 10 minutes of a LASIK procedure presby.

If your vision is normal except for presbyopia before a procedure, however, you might notice a trend toward blurred vision distance presby immediately after LASIK. This problem need not disappear, either. As sometimes happens with correction using machine vision, multifocal lenses, you can increase your risk of developing reduced contrast sensitivity and / or a tendency to see halos around lights at night.

If you lose contrast sensitivity, it is possible that the decreased ability to distinguish objects at the origins of similar colors. However, some research indicates that the loss of contrast sensitivity associated with presby LASIK may be only temporary. Clinics of Ophthalmology americas North (March 2006) reported studies showing that contrast sensitivity is recovered within about two months of a LASIK procedure presby in people who are nearsighted and within about six months in people that are Farsighter.

At the 2006 conference AAO, Michael Assouline, MD, PhD, said in a scientific paper that presby LASIK for the correction of vision intermediate vision might be necessary to sacrifice something to ensure that contrast sensitivity is maintained following a procedure.

The survey results show that in general presby LASIK, like many other procedures for correcting vision, it is unlikely to provide a permanent solution to problems of vision-related presbyopia. As the eyes changes, future improvements surgery may be necessary. In addition, complications associated with the procedure include loss of ability to see, as you did once without glasses or contact lenses.
