Moria unveils a new device for creating ultra thin flaps in LASIK
Moria unveils its new One-Plus uses SBK microkeratome in the upcoming 2008 session of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in Chicago. Moria present the results of its clinical trials. In the eyes receiving this Moria SBK (ultra-thin flap LASIK), the flap thickness precision, speed of sight improvement, the higher-order aberrations and smoothness of the cornea bed underneath the flap all compared favourably or equal a femtosecond (double laser) SBK flap technology, according to Moria.
With many surgeons wary of creating ectatic (too weak) corneas with their LASIK procedures, the interest in using thin flaps has increased. Some surgeons routinely used in the flaps 130 – μ mo range thinnest, either using mechanical microkeratomes or femtosecond lasers. I myself flaps that are routinely create 110 microns using the femtosecond laser Ziemer, without problems.
However, there may be additional risks when working with ultra-thin flap (less than 100 microns), as microstriae (micro wrinkles), contained in the rear flap.
