Lasik Replaces Eye Glasses!

September 22nd, 2008 Posted in Lasik Knowledgebase

LASIK is a surgical procedure that can reduce a person from dependence on glasses or contact lenses. The procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea (the clear covering sensitive on the front of the eye). To clear vision, the eye’s cornea and the lens must bend (refract) light rays properly, so that images are focused on the retina. If the light rays are not clearly focused on the retina, the images you see are blurred.

LASIK is laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser.

What is the real difference between conventional and laser eye surgery custom LASIK eye surgery?

Conventional laser eye surgery

Conventional Laser Eye Surgery treats the vast majority of optical aberrations called “minor” aberrations. They are responsible for causing nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Customize the LASIK eye surgery offers a more accurate treatment for patients who have “higher order” aberrations, that we can now measure the Aberrometer. For these patients, customized laser eye surgery can provide a better quality of vision by measuring and addressing all these aberrations as part of the treatment plan.

During LASIK surgery, a small incision is made in order to create a corneal flap. Then, a laser beam works within to reshape the cornea to correct vision. After the renovation, the flap is put back in place and serves as a sort of natural bandage.

Will I need reading glasses after treatment?

In general, patients under 40 years of age read well without glasses after treatment. More than 40 patients may need expansion to read small print.

Presbyopia is the term that refers to the natural weakening of the muscles of concentration that occurs in our early to mid 40s, causing the need for providing magnification of reading glasses. LASIK treatment does not prevent or correct presbyopia. We will also be happy to discuss another option called monovision.

It is important to know what to reasonably expect from PRK and LASIK vision correction. If you expect to lose dependence on vision correction devices such as contacts or glasses and don’t expect 20/20 vision, you may be pleasantly surprised. There is no way to predict the outcome exactly, but most people achieve vision of 20/20.
