LASIK and Presbyopia
The laser eye surgery, and in particular LASIK surgery is a safe effective and predictable method of correcting nearsightedness, hyperopia and astigmatism. These common vision problems occur because the refractive power of the eyes is not as precise as to allow light to focus on a specific point in your retina. Another type of problem common vision that is due to a deficiency in the actual mechanism focusing on their eyes is called presbyopia.
Presbicia, which literally means “old eyes” is a normal and expected consequence of the aging process. The crystalline in their eyes is composed of proteins. These proteins are soft and flexible when they are younger. Starting when approaching its 40 presbyopia occurs as the composition of proteins of the lens changes, making it harder and less flexible. When the lens loses its ability to flex, it is no longer capable of changing its shape and effectiveness bend light rays as sharply, and the ability to focus on near objects is diminished. As mentioned earlier, the clinical symptoms of presbyopia usually begin between the forties and fifties and progressively worsening across age sixty-five. When presbyopia begins, people who already wear glasses may need binoculars or trifocals, and those who have never worn glasses may need reading glasses.
If you are considering 40 to LASIK, presbyopia is an important concept to understand. LASIK has absolutely no effect on the eye’s focusing on the muscles or the lens, so it does not correct presbyopia hands. Therefore, if you only need reading glasses, is not a good LASIK vision correction option for you. However, if you need to have their vision corrected distance because you are nearsighted, or have astigmatism Farsighter and need help with a narrow vision because they are beginning to experience presbyopia, LASIK may be an option if performed as specialized monovision LASIK.
Another important consideration is whether you are nearsighted and slightly in their forties. Patients who are slightly nearsighted, perhaps less than -3.00 D nearsighted correction, may notice that while it is not possible to clearly read or comfortably with their glasses or contact lenses, one can read quite well by removing they. This is truly a unique advantage of mild myopia - can be presbyopic and still be able to read by removing their glasses or contact lenses. Depending on your lifestyle and daily activities, this may make you a bad candidate for LASIK. If you are slightly nearsighted, and over 40 have LASIK, in all likelihood, you will achieve an excellent distance vision after LASIK, as you will become “normal vision.” This will lead to his loss of ability to read since he is no longer nearsighted. Once again, depending on your lifestyle and vision necessary for everyday life, monovision LASIK may be an option you want to discuss with your surgeon LASIK.
